Scripture
tells us that God created men and women in His image. This being true how and
when does that image show up in a fallen world? This question I want to attempt
to answer with this article.
Genesis 1:27
(NIV84)
27
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
Man is a
spirit wrapped in flesh that possesses a soul. This
is bore out throughout scripture but I don’t want to veer off topic to explore
this right now. I will later. Now look at the Trinity. God the
Father (soul) God the Son (flesh) God the Holy Spirit (spirit), but if God made
both men and women in His image then it stands to reason that no one person has
or is that image alone especially since God made the comment, “it is not good
for man to be alone.” If the perfect image of God was in Adam why would Adam
need Eve? Let’s take a look.
Genesis 2:25
(NIV84)
25 The man
and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
If a man or
a man and woman together are the image of God can we see it simply because the
two are standing naked together? I don’t think so. The reason why is another
statement God made.
Genesis 2:24
(NIV84)
24 For this
reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and
they will become one flesh.
When a man
and woman come together the way God created it originally is the answer to when
and how the image of God shows up. God created sex to be a time where each
partner truly gave themselves completely to the other and in so doing show the
perfect love that is the image of God. Note the catch, “Gave themselves to the
other completely”. God is love and only in true love can the image of God be
seen.
For those of
you who are married stop trying to have sex just so you can feel good. Start
giving yourself to your partner completely. For those who aren’t married it is
not possible for you to achieve this because God has not given you to the other
in Holy Union. This is why God told us no sex outside of marriage.
